Abstract

The study aimed to explore the correlational relationship between humor styles and self-esteem among gifted students in Makkah City, in addition to analyzing differences in these variables according to gender. The study employed a descriptive correlational methodology and was conducted on a sample of (97) male and female intermediate school students, randomly selected from those classified as gifted. The instruments used in the study included the Humor Styles Questionnaire and the Self-Esteem Scale for Adolescents.

The findings revealed that the level of self-esteem among gifted students was high, while the level of humor styles was moderate. Aggressive humor and self-defeating humor appeared relatively higher, whereas self-enhancing humor was noticeably lower. Furthermore, the results indicated no statistically significant differences in either humor styles or self-esteem attributable to gender, and no significant correlation between overall humor and self-esteem, except for a weak but statistically significant negative correlation between self-enhancing humor and self-esteem.

The study recommended the importance of promoting adaptive humor use and incorporating psychological dimensions in gifted education programs, in addition to conducting more in-depth studies to understand the psychological and social roles of humor in shaping self-concept among gifted students.
